Project Overview
ElectriCom provided comprehensive storm restoration services across upstate South Carolina following Hurricane Helene (October 2024) and a subsequent ice storm. Work was completed in partnership with Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative and West Carolina Electric Cooperative through their joint venture, Upcountry Fiber.
The Challenge
The region experienced two major weather events in rapid succession, causing widespread power outages, significant fiber internet disruption, and loss of critical connectivity. Traditional telecom providers informed customers that restoration could take 4–6 months, leaving communities without reliable service.
The Solution
- ElectriCom delivered a coordinated storm response that combined power and telecom restoration simultaneously.
- Integrated response across power and fiber infrastructure
- Direct coordination with Blue Ridge and West Carolina cooperatives
- Alignment with Upcountry Fiber’s service commitment: “When your power is on, your internet will be on”
Execution
Strategy
ElectriCom deployed a large-scale response across power and telecom teams, coordinating internal crews and subcontractors to restore critical infrastructure quickly and safely under storm conditions.
Timeline
Crews were mobilized rapidly following the storm, with hundreds of personnel deployed to support restoration efforts and maintain continuous progress until systems were brought back online.
Performance
ElectriCom supported utilities with simultaneous power and fiber restoration, enabling faster overall recovery by aligning infrastructure rebuild efforts across both divisions.
Precision
Despite storm-related challenges, work was completed with a strong focus on safety, coordination, and quality, ensuring infrastructure was restored correctly and reliably — not just quickly.
Results
Rapid mobilization when it mattered most
ElectriCom deployed hundreds of personnel within a compressed timeframe, supporting utilities with immediate response and accelerating restoration efforts following widespread storm damage.
Coordinated power and fiber restoration
By aligning power and telecom crews simultaneously, ElectriCom helped restore critical infrastructure faster, reducing downtime and improving overall system recovery for the utility.
Efficient, high-volume execution under pressure
ElectriCom maintained continuous production in a high-demand, high-risk environment, supporting large-scale restoration without sacrificing coordination or control.
Reinforced trust during critical events
Strong field leadership, clear communication, and dependable performance positioned ElectriCom as a reliable partner during emergency conditions, when execution matters most.
Expanded long-term partnership opportunities
Successful storm response strengthened relationships with utility partners, creating follow-on opportunities for planned work and long-term collaboration.
Client Impact
ElectriCom’s rapid and coordinated response created a significant competitive advantage for Blue Ridge and West Carolina cooperatives. While competitors projected 4–6 month restoration timelines, Upcountry Fiber was able to restore service immediately as power returned.
Industry Impact
- High-speed internet is critical during emergencies
- Fiber infrastructure is increasingly viewed alongside power, water, and gas
- Integrated power and telecom restoration is a major advantage in disaster response
Why It Matters
ElectriCom’s ability to deliver simultaneous power and telecom restoration demonstrates faster recovery for communities, reduced downtime for critical services, and a clear competitive advantage for utility partners.
